Fort Ticonderoga Allee Project Completed

DeFranco Landscaping has completed the Allee Tree & Pathway project leading to the Fort Ticonderoga King’s Garden. The Allee was planted with (50) ‘Karpick’ Red Maples (Acer rubrum) last month between Fort Ticonderoga and the King’s Garden. The project really enhances the entrance into the King’s Garden from the Fort. Visit www.fort-ticonderoga.org for more information on the King’s Garden and their summer schedule. Admission to the King’s Garden is included in the fort’s admission.

The grass walkway was replaced with a reinforced cell walkway with gravel and stonedust. The walkway is designed to withstand small vehicle loads and the heavy foot traffic from the 20,000 seasonal visitors a year that the King’s Garden receives during the summer season. The clay soils on the site can stay saturated for many days after a rain event so the walkway’s grade was elevated up with a stone drainage layer and the reinforced cells.

The King’s Garden is a term used on 18th-century military maps to delineate the Fort’s garrison gardens. The King’s garden was originally designed in 1921 by a leading landscape architect, Marian Coffin. The new trees lead to the nine foot brick walls of the King’s Garden.

A well is the focal point at the center of the Allee
